About us

Gengo is a technology company making translation simple and removing the language barrier for customers as they go global. Customers order human translation through our website or our API, which lets you plug into our growing network of over 20,000 translators. Gengo helps a wide range of customers — from individual businesses to global enterprises. Approximately 60 employees call themselves Gengons, located in offices around the globe including Tokyo, San Mateo, London, and Manila. Although spread-out, we function as one-team through "wormholes" — our always-on video portals. Essentially, our headquarters is on the Internet!

Your mission

As design lead at Gengo, you will work with our product designers and visual designers as part of the Product & Growth team to build the next generation of Gengo products. You will be the key person driving overall design direction and at the same time you will be hands-on in creating wireframes and UI solutions for our customer-facing, translator-facing, and internal-facing products. This is a rare chance to be part of a growing international startup that is serious about technology and is genuinely helping the world to communicate freely.

You will be based out of our Tokyo office, joining roughly 30 Gengons who work in design, marketing, engineering, sales, and project management.

Responsibilities:

-You are equally comfortable leading the design team, guide best practices and methodologies as you are comfortable doing everything from hands-on wireframing to user testing to producing fully polished designs.
  • Rapid UX/UI prototyping on paper and through design tools such as Sketch, InVision
-Depending on the situation you can produce wireframes within a few hours or develop comprehensive mockups, user flow diagrams, and detailed explanations and redlines of every piece of the product
  • Responsible for taking concepts from wireframe to design and checking implementation
-You use a design tool to create wireframes and mockups and put together presentations that explain  your key use cases and design decisions
-You try out beta versions of your product and give detailed, concise feedback directly to engineering in verbal and written form
  • Implement creative solutions for our business challenges
-You brainstorm a breadth of potential solutions to different user problems
-You know how to get data about your users and make data-driven decisions
  • Work with product and engineering to clarify requirements and iterate as needed
-You list core use cases and edge cases of user flows and know when to talk to product managers and engineers to clarify open questions
  • Develop and advocate for excellent customer experiences
You do your own user research, talk to users, write and summarize surveys, show prototypes, and voice your opinion in meetings on what a good user experience should look like

Requirements:

  • Must have experience working on a tech product in UI/UX design
  • An online portfolio that demonstrates strong UI/UX design skills (including desktop and mobile)
  • Ability to articulate creative concepts and rationale to developers and non-designers in other departments clearly, and to provide feedback and/or guidance to such parties
  • Basic understanding of HTML, CSS and standard web technology
  • Ability to put yourself in the mind of the customer
  • Proactive use of paper prototyping, iterative design approaches
  • Strong project management skills and team-oriented with the ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines
